Survey: Wireless Sensor Networking Out of the Lab, Into Production

As WSN Installations Increase, Customers Turning to Professional Services to Create New Lines of Business and Revenue Opportunities

BURLINGTON, Mass. - August 24, 2005 - As wireless sensor networking moves out of the lab and into production, it is increasingly being used as a "game changer" and competitive advantage for early adopters of the technology. The results of a recent survey of wireless sensor network (WSN) engagements revealed that companies implementing future WSN projects won’t be going it alone. The survey was conducted by Millennial Net.

In fact, 73 percent of respondents planning future projects intend to bring in outside expertise, up from 40 percent in the past. Not surprisingly, a vast majority - 96 percent - of WSN projects that engaged professional services reported satisfaction with the project results. More and more companies are realizing the advantages and need for professional services.

The survey of 136 businesses confirmed the steady growth of wireless sensor networking adoption, but showed a shift in desired outcomes and justifications for outside support - away from seeking simple expertise or faster time-to-market and toward reducing risk and saving cost. The shift indicates a growing maturity in the WSN market, according to Millennial Net.

While platform and systems vendors will continue to be at the forefront of most WSN initiatives, the survey predicts that the future will see application vendors joining them as preferred sources. The kinds of projects companies are looking for outside support on include RF design and testing, prototype development and sensor/gateway integration.

"As early adopters begin implementing wireless sensor networks, they’re quickly realizing the need for professional services to help them integrate the network into their production environments and processes," said Mark Pacelle, vice president, marketing at Millennial Net. "The survey reinforces our claims that folks shouldn’t go it alone. Wireless sensor networking solutions can provide companies with enormous competitive advantages, provided they’re fully integrated into the broader application or production system."

Millennial Net’s MeshScape systems powers some of the most complex wireless mesh networks in the market, supporting industrial and commercial needs including predictive maintenance, remote monitoring, hotel guestroom control management, utility equipment sub-metering, building envelope integrity assurance, and energy use reduction.
